King Protea – Protea cynaroides
The King Protea is the most iconic member of the Protea family and South Africa’s national flower. Indigenous to the fynbos biome, its name cynaroides means “artichoke-like,” a clear reference to its distinctive bloom shape.
This striking shrub produces large, long-lasting flowers from its second year onward and blooms annually. Highly valued as a cut flower, it is grown and exported worldwide. In the garden, it makes a bold focal point whether planted alone or in groups, and indoors its long stems create dramatic floral displays. Flowering occurs from late winter to spring (June–October).
Named after the Greek god Proteus, this species reflects the adaptability and diversity of the Protea genus. It is a hardy, low-maintenance, waterwise shrub that also makes a thoughtful, eco-friendly gift.
Growing Conditions
King Proteas prefer acidic, nutrient-poor, well-drained soil and are sensitive to phosphorus fertilisers. Excellent drainage is essential—plant on slopes or raised mounds if needed. Once established, plants are drought resistant and tolerate coastal conditions, strong winds, sandy soils, and full sun. They can withstand light frost (±25–30°F).
Mulching with bark, straw, or leaves helps regulate soil temperature, retain moisture, and suppress weeds, but mulch should be kept away from the trunk. Avoid excessive mulching in poorly drained soil to prevent root rot. Water deeply once a week until well established.
Pruning
Pruning flowering stems encourages bushier growth, improves airflow, and benefits overall plant health. Flowers grow on two-year-old branches, so only prune stems that have flowered. Prune during or after flowering, cutting above four to five leaves. Never cut into bare wood and always remove old flower heads.
Landscaping
A bold, textured shrub reaching approximately 2.4 × 2.4 m. Best planted towards the back of garden beds to avoid shading smaller plants. Pairs beautifully with restios, aloes, succulents, gravel beds, or rock gardens for a natural, waterwise landscape. Suitable for screening, hedging, feature planting, or container growing.
