Protea Pincushion Plants

We stock a selection of Protea Pincushion varieties in a range of colours. These distinctive blooms are long lasting and highly valued as cut flowers, adding brightness and texture to floral arrangements.

Indigenous to South Africa’s fynbos biome, pincushions flower from mid-October to the end of December. Their nectar-rich blooms attract beneficial insects and insect-eating birds, creating a vibrant and healthy garden environment. They are hardy, low-maintenance, waterwise shrubs that perform beautifully both in the garden and as cut flowers indoors.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Pincushion proteas prefer acidic, nutrient-poor, well-drained soils. In their natural habitat they grow on sandstone mountain slopes at altitudes between 300 and 2000 m, primarily in the winter rainfall regions of the Cape Floral Kingdom.

Although naturally adapted to wet winters and dry summers, they are highly adaptable and grow well in summer rainfall areas and regions with moderate frost. Once established, they are drought resistant and tolerate full sun, strong winds, coastal exposure, and poor sandy soils.

Mulching with bark, straw, or leaves helps suppress weeds and regulate soil temperature. Avoid heavy mulching in poorly drained soils, as this can lead to root rot.

Pruning

Cutting flowering stems for display improves light penetration and air circulation. Flowers develop on two-year-old branches, so only prune stems that have flowered.

Landscaping

A vigorous, well-branched shrub reaching approximately 1.5 × 2 m. Best planted towards the back of garden beds to prevent shading smaller plants. Pincushion proteas provide bold contrast when paired with restios, aloes, or nerines, and suit gravel beds or rock gardens alongside succulents for a waterwise, low-maintenance landscape.

Ideal for screening, hedging, feature planting, or container growing.

Notes

Sensitive to the fungal disease Phytophthora cinnamomi, which is usually fatal once symptoms appear. Also sensitive to phosphorus fertilisers.
