Conebush (Leucadendron)

Conebushes (Leucadendron species) are striking, indigenous fynbos shrubs native to South Africa. Known for their sculptural foliage and cone-like flower heads, they bring strong structure, colour, and texture to the garden throughout the year.

These hardy shrubs are valued both in the landscape and as long-lasting cut foliage. Many varieties display vibrant seasonal colour changes, particularly in winter and spring, making them excellent feature plants in waterwise gardens.

Growing Conditions

Conebushes thrive in acidic, nutrient-poor, well-drained soils and require excellent drainage to remain healthy. They perform best in full sun and are well adapted to a wide range of conditions, including coastal exposure, strong winds, and sandy soils. Once established, they are drought resistant and low maintenance.

Mulching with organic material helps regulate soil temperature and suppress weeds, but mulch should be kept away from the plant stem. Avoid excessive mulching or poorly drained soil, as this may lead to root rot.

Pruning

Light pruning after flowering helps maintain a neat shape and encourages healthy growth. Only prune green, leafy growth and never cut back into old, woody stems with no leaves.

Landscaping

Conebushes are versatile shrubs suitable for garden beds, borders, screening, hedging, or feature planting. They pair beautifully with other fynbos plants such as proteas, restios, and ericas, and are ideal for gravel gardens, rockeries, and low-water landscapes. Many varieties also grow well in containers.

Notes

Sensitive to phosphorus fertilisers and susceptible to the fungal disease Phytophthora cinnamomi in poorly drained soils. Proper drainage is essential for long-term success.
