Red Nerine sarniensis (Spider Lily)
Despite its common name, Nerine sarniensis is not a true lily but a bulbous perennial in the Amaryllidaceae family. Indigenous to South Africa, it occurs naturally on rocky mountain slopes of the Northern and Western Cape, particularly between Citrusdal and Caledon.
This compact plant grows to about 45 cm tall and produces elegant flowers on bare stems, often before the leaves emerge. It is well suited to containers, rock gardens, and sunny garden beds.
Flowers
Nerine sarniensis is widely grown for its striking, long-lasting cut flowers and is highly valued by florists. The red blooms are known for their distinctive sparkling effect in bright light, caused by the way light reflects through layered pigments in the petals.
Flowering occurs in late summer to early autumn. Leaves appear shortly after flowering and are carried through winter. In the wild, the red forms are pollinated by the mountain pride butterfly (Moneris).
Fertilisers are not recommended, as they promote leaf growth at the expense of flowers.
Growing Conditions
This species is easy to grow in a well-drained medium, such as a mix of river sand, loam, and acidic compost. Bulbs should be planted with their necks exposed above the soil surface. They perform well in pots, rockeries, and herbaceous borders, and prefer positions receiving at least half a day of sun during the winter growing season.
Watering
Nerine bulbs must be kept dry during their summer dormant period, as they do not tolerate prolonged wet conditions. In early autumn, give one thorough watering to encourage flowering, then withhold water until leaves appear. Once in active growth, water deeply at regular intervals, allowing the soil to dry almost completely between waterings.
