African Flag – Chamathe Floribunda

African Flag (Chasmanthe floribunda)

Also known as the Cobra Lily, African Flag is a hardy, low-maintenance, and waterwise fynbos plant well suited to landscape planting. This striking perennial reaches around 1.2 m in height and forms dense clumps of long, sword-shaped leaves topped with bold flower spikes arranged in neat rows.
The nectar-rich blooms range in colour from gold and orange to deep burgundy. Each flower spike carries approximately 20–40 flowers, attracting birds and especially sunbirds. The plant adds strong texture and definition when planted among other garden species and also performs well as a cut flower.
Endemic to the Cape Province of South Africa, African Flag is adaptable to a wide range of climates and grows successfully in both sun and partial shade. This listing includes four flowering-size corms.

Growth & Flowering

Chasmanthe floribunda is a herbaceous perennial from the Iris family. Flowering occurs in spring and summer in the Southern Hemisphere. Leaf growth begins in autumn, triggered by the first seasonal rains, as the plant comes out of dormancy.

Climate

A resilient plant that prefers warm conditions but tolerates a wide temperature range, from approximately −5 °C to 43 °C.

Planting

Plant corms about 12 cm deep and space them 15 cm apart. African Flag prefers well-drained sandy soil but will also grow in loam or clay soils, provided drainage is adequate.

Watering & Care

Water requirements are low. During the dormant period, ensure corms are not left in waterlogged soil to prevent rot. During active growth, watering once a week or every second week will support healthy flowering. While generally low care, a light feeding when growth begins will improve overall plant health.
